Wild Bird Food

Picture
Contains: black sunflower, red dari, natural groats, millet, cut maize, wheat, various small seeds, vegetable oil.

An all year round seed blend with a higher proportion of black oil sunflowerseeds to ensure correct nutritional values. Designed to attract the widest variety of birds possible while using one type of feed. Contains small seeds as well as cereals plus vegetable oil to increase feeding values. Does NOT contain cheap fillers such as whole oats which have little nutritional value. Excellent for hanging feeders and can also be fed from a table. If two feeding points are used (feeder and table) then there are very few birds which will not take this mix.

Superior Wild Bird Food - Husk Free

Picture
Contains: sunflower hearts, red dari, natural groats, millet, cut maize, wheat, rapeseed, currants with aniseed and vegetable oils.

A husk free mix means no mess around the feeding area but more importantly a higher nutrient level and energy intake for the birds, AND it's safer for them - birds are constantly on the look out for predators so foods which they can eat straightaway are of huge benefit. Also contains fruit for blackbirds, starlings and song thrushes so will attract a wider variety of birds than the standard mix. Plus we only use small raisins so that the mix will still flow through a tubular feeder. Flavoured with aniseed oil as an attractant and a digestive aid, and with vegetable oil to increase food value.

Premium Wild Bird Food - Husk-Free, Wheat Free, with suet

Picture
Contains: sunflower hearts, red dari, white dari, naked oats, millet, peanut granules, cut maize, suet pellets, canary seed, wild seeds. Aniseed and vegetable oil.

The ultimate all year round wild bird food, an outstanding mix. A totally wheat free, husk free blend with a high proportion of sunflower hearts which are taken by almost all birds and are a high energy, easily digestible food source. However, this is a proper seed mix and there are 10 other ingredients plus around 20 different types of naturally occurring wild seeds. The suet pellets are energy rich with the yellow pellets containing insects (insectivorous protein) and the red pellets containing berries (Vitamin C and antioxidants). Naturally occurring wild seeds attract the small beaked seed eating birds and they also benefit from the natural groats, millet and peanut nibs. Aniseed oil and vegetable oil are added to this mix

Peanuts

Picture
We do 3 types of whole, shelled peanuts. They differ by oil content, calorific value and therefore protein level. Country of origin for all our types can vary because of different harvesting periods but nothing is allowed which comes below our high grade Standard Peanut (we don't do a 'basic level', the energy and oil content would not be high enough for us).

TESTING
We always test monkey nuts and sunflower for mould and aspergillus.

Hsuji 40/50
A round paleskin peanut from the seaflower varieties grown in China. Marginally higher in values than our Premium, these are grown specifically for their sweet taste. A larger size peanut with high oil and protein content which provides an invaluable high energy food source.

Premium Peanuts
These are superior peanuts from the Spanish type varieties that are grown for their higher oil content. Usually chosen from Indian Java, Chinese Hsuji 60/70, South African natals or Brazilian Lightskins.

Standard peanuts
We choose Runner or Virginia varieties, and find the best are generally Indian bold, Chinese Virginia & South American Runner. These are high in oils, proteins and energy and although marginally less specialised than our Premium Peanuts, are an invaluable high energy and digestible food source.

Johnston & Jeff recommend that whole peanuts are ONLY fed from a wire mesh feeder because smaller birds and fledglings can choke on them. It is for this reason that we do not include whole peanuts in any of our blends which can be fed from a tubular feeder or table top.

Monkey Nuts

Picture
Peanuts in the shell - makes birds work for their food. Members of the Tit family will often tackle these rather than go for the easier, kernel option

Sunflower Hearts

Picture
Bakery grade kernels (husk free) from black oil sunflower seeds, so have the highest levels of oil and therefore energy

Niger Seed

Picture
Superb little seed, easily digestible, high in oils, protein [19%] and energy. Loved by Finches and Tits.

Dried Mealworms

Picture
Excellent source of high energy proteins providing essential all year round feeding, particularly for fledglings and for adult birds.

Suet/ Fat Balls

Picture
The key ingredient in fat balls is suet. Suet is pure refined animal or vegetable fat and is one of the most concentrated and easily metabolised energy foods for wild birds. It gives them instant vigour, and they love it. It's a superb all-year-round food, and can even cope with hard frost.

Our fat balls are made to our own tried and tested recipe and to the same exacting standards as our mixtures. The only other ingredients are cereals and seeds. We never use bulking materials such as sand and waste products. We love our birds and want them to be healthy.

Our Fat Balls are available in a variety of sizes and can be bought singly or in nets or individually wrapped without nets. This type of packaging is to keep this excellent food in good condition. Fat balls should be fed in addition to other foods - they provide much needed energy for the birds and are an acceptable substitute for insect protein, which is lacking from a wild bird's diet in winter. Fledglings in particular need insect protein for healthy growth and development, so it is important to continue feeding fat balls all year round.

High Energy Fat Feasts
Half coconuts filled with suet, cereals and seeds. Min weight 200grm

No 1 Parrot Food

Picture
Amazons, Macaws, Poicephalus, African Grey, Eclectus, Pionus, Cockatoo.

A traditional and sound base food mix, made to an enhanced formula. Composition: striped and white sunflowerseed with safflowerseed, whole maize, whole oats, paleskin peanuts, monkey nuts, pine nuts, chillies, flaked maize, flaked peas, puffed maize, puffed wheat, naked oats, buckwheat, and red dari. Feed with fresh fruit and veg. Avian nutritionists, breeders and bird-keepers are learning ever more about the food needs of these splendid birds and the nutritional benefits of some foods vs. others. Hence, even a traditional base mix should be upgraded as our knowledge grows. This excellent formula has 16 ingredients. It should be fed with fresh fruit and vegetables, or can be blended with Johnston & Jeff’s Fruit, Veg and Nut Mix.

Traditional Parrot

Picture
Amazons, Macaws, Poicephalus, African Grey, Eclectus, Pionus, Cockatoo.

A traditional breeding and standard seed mix for Parrots - the blend includes striped and white sunflowerseed with safflowerseed, groundnut kernels, monkey nuts, whole maize, clipped oats, pine nuts, and chillies.

Premium Parrot Fruit

Picture
Composition: medium striped and white sunflower, safflower, whole maize, clipped oats, pumpkin seed, flaked peas, puffed maize, papaya, banana, currants, pineapple, apricot, brazil nut kernels, walnut halves, peanuts, monkey nuts, pine nuts, chillies, rosehips, carrot. This is an extraordinary Parrot mix, designed to be the best there is, exactly what our birds need for richness, nutrition, palatability and interest. It contains 5 different fruits and 5 different types of nuts, all tested to human consumption grade, plus vegetables and seeds. In all it has 22 different ingredients with over 50% fruits, nuts and veg.

Suitable for: Macaws and large Hookbills, African Greys, Amazons and most Parrot types except Galahs (we do a special blend for Galahs).

Low Sunflower for African Greys

Picture
Some birds can become addicted to sunflower which can cause problems (e.g. vitamin A deficiency, lymphomas). So we have developed a specialist blend which is low in sunflower but still give the right levels of nutrients, richness and variety, AND are right for the particular species. A blend of 24 ingredients specially for the smaller beaked Parrots. Composition: 5% white sunflower, safflower, oats, red dari, white dari, hemp, buckwheat, wheat, paddy rice, pumpkin seed, flaked peas, flaked maize, puffed maize, puffed wheat, papaya, banana, pineapple, apricot, coconut, brazil nut kernels, walnut halves, peanuts, pine nuts, chillies. Monkey nuts are not included as many owners prefer it this way. Suitable for African Greys, Amazons, Jardines, Caiques, Senegals, Pionus, large and small Macaws and Cockatoos.

This blend was developed, tested and re-tested in mixed aviary collections to make sure that it was just right for the species of birds for which it was intended.

Low Sunflower for Larger Parrots

Picture
Help your bird reduce its daily fat intake. The rich variety of ingredients provides a mix full of different tastes and texture for an interesting meal every time. Add even more interest for your bird and put part or all of each meal inside foraging devices to encourage movement and exercise, as well as providing essential mental stimulation.

Premium Fruity Parakeet

Picture
Another outstanding mix, the equivalent of our Parrot Fruit but for the smaller species. This is truly awesome. British Finch

Picture
Ingredients: canary seed, rapeseed, niger seed, wild seeds, linseed, naked oats, hempseed and Jap millet. Formulated for British and European finches and for the many permutations which exist within this most important of bird species. This is a blend of high protein canary seed with a selection of oilseeds well known for their antioxidants, vitamin and mineral content and omega 3 fatty acids. Also includes natural groats  - for their protein and dietary fibre - and around 30 naturally occurring wild seeds and grasses for trace element content. This is a nutritious and easily digestible blend, greatly enjoyed by British Finches for its variety and texture.

There is no specific Type for Finches because they do very well indeed on our Type 22 blend with its 50% content of soft jap type millet. They will also relish germinated or sprouted seeds - see details of our Seed for Soaking.

JOHNSTON & JEFF FOREIGN FINCH 20kg

Picture
A good all round mixture for all finches, ensuring optimum health and condition, it is nutritionally ballanced and addative free

99.9% pure, a mix of canary seeds, millet seeds(including panicum and white millet) ideal for zebras bengalese, gouldians etc

Collection welcome

A compound feedstuff for tropical finches. Ingredients: panicum, white milletseed, canary seed, vegetable oil. 50% panicum millet (small seed) means this mix is highly suited for small topical finches. This is a highly nutritious blend and don’t be fooled by the fact it only has three ingredients. They are the best available including soft white millet from the USA - this is the finest quality and the most easily digestible of proso millets. The high percentage of panicum millets makes it a very good blend for Gouldians and Cordon Bleu.

Utility

Picture
Utility
Ingredients:  white/yellow millet, canary seed, red millet, vegetable oil.

Pet and breeding birds going through the moult need a high carbohydrate blend. This has been specially developed for this purpose and is ideal, with ingredients which also ensure a good balance of B vitamins, protein, essential amino acids, and iron. It is also good as a maintenance mix for pet birds, and should be supplemented with millet sprays, cuttlefish bones, and Type blends twice a week.

Lovebird

Picture
Specially formulated splendid mix for these splendid birds. Does NOT include sunflower so ensuring that the fat content is reduced. But if you are feeding outdoor or more active birds then our Small Parakeet blend is ideal. Composition: canary seed, white millet, groats, jap millet, panicum millet, buckwheat, linseed, niger seed, hemp seed, wheat.

Standard Canary

Picture
Ingredients: 30% canary seed, 70% white/yellow millet, vegetable oil. This is a balanced, higher carbohydrate mix and is eminently suitable for pet birds.

Expert

Picture
Ingredients:  50% canary seed, white millet, panicum millet, red millet, vegetable oil. This is a perfect balance of high protein canary seed blended with soft white millet and small, easily digestible panicum millets rich in carbohydrates. This blend is used by many top winners and breeders as the base for their feeding regime.

Budgerigar

Picture
A protein pick-me-up for Budgerigars. Compound feedstuff to be fed as part of the diet and should not exceed 15% for pet birds but can be increased to 25% in breeding or aviary birds as required. Ingredients: Jap millet, panicum, red milletseed, hempseed, niger seed, naked oats, aniseed oil.

A high proportion of Jap millet is included because this is the best variety when chicks are in the nest and contains the right proteins for fledglings. Can also be fed to bring birds into breeding condition and at times of stress - moult particularly. Pet birds would benefit by being fed this mixture every other day in a separate feeding pot or finger drawer but the container should be taken out in the evening - don’t feed ad lib. See Scottish Type 88 for more information on naked oats, or groats.
